Weymouth is more than just a picturesque town; it’s a living tapestry of history, with the harbour as its beating heart. We are always discovering new and exciting things about the history and hearing new tales . So, as you amble along the waterfront, let your imagination whisk you back to a time when sailors, traders, and adventurers trod these very cobblestone streets. A mere 50 yards away, the tales of history come to life Helen Lane, or as the locals whimsically call it, Hell Lane, is believed to be the entry point of the infamous bubonic plague in 1348 by a french sailor.
The harbour has been used for many centuries with evidence showing Roman Galleys sailing up the river Wey. It Melcombe Regis, on the north side of the harbour was once separate from Weymouth on the south. It faced economic struggles and there were constant conflicts between the two sides of the harbour. So, during the reign of Elizabeth I the council weary of the continual disputes united them into one borough in 1571. This strengthened the trade, improved defences, and fostered a more cohesive community, and ensured Weymouth’s prosperity.
Cannon ball
In the middle of the 17th Century Weymouth was involved in the Civil war. Royalist’s plotting to deliver the ports back to King Charles I meant once again Weymouth was in the wars. Look skyward on Maiden Street, and you’ll spot a cannonball wedged in a building, underneath the window. A silent testament to the tumultuous days of the Civil War in 1645. These historical remnants stand as tributes to the town’s endurance and courage during turbulent times. World Wars
The town played a significant role in both World Wars, leaving an indelible mark on its identity. During World War II, Weymouth’s strategic location made it a crucial embarkation point for the Allied forces. Feel the weight of history as you learn that soldiers from the US 1st Division set forth to Omaha Beach from this very harbour in June 1944. The Steamers used to provide ferry services to Portland and coastal excursions. Theses steamers were requestioned to serve as minesweepers, and the current day Portland ferry “My Girl” was used to ferry ammunition for our troops along the coast of France during World War II. Nothe Fort
