Portland Bill Lighthouse

History and Majesty: A visit here is a must when you plan your trip to explore Portland. Built in 1906, the Portland Bill Lighthouse stands proudly as a historic landmark. Offering breath-taking views of the English Channel, it’s a must-visit for history enthusiasts and those seeking panoramic sea views. Go into the visitor’s centre and get yourself a bit of memorabilia, before you climb to the top of the lighthouse where you get the best views. The Island of Portland is great place to be to watch the sun set. When the sunsets- it’s like a painting coming to life. We also enjoy visiting when the weather is rough and blowing a hooly, watching the waves crashing against the rocks is truly spectacular. If you need to get away from the element’s or simply grab a bite to eat , The Lobster pot cafe welcomes you in, for a tasty crab sandwich and pot of tea or perhaps one of their other specialities.

Pulpit’s rock

Nature’s Masterpiece: Pulpit Rock, a stunning limestone formation which is located at the southern tip of the island nestled next to the lighthouse. It was formed in the 1870’s after a natural arch was cut away by quarrymen. It juts out into the sea, and it provides a perfect photo opportunity. We like to leave our car in the car park and then explore the coastline a bit more. It’s a very picturesque setting and great for exploring or just sit down and enjoy the view. It’s a great spot for a picnic so pack your blanket and those sandwiches and enjoy.

Governors & The Grove Museum  

Green Oasis: Escape to the Governors Community Garden before visiting Grove museum take your time to wander through this hidden gem where flora and fauna thrive in harmony. With an array of trees and flower beds Immerse yourself in the tranquillity of this lush haven. We enjoy walking around and then having a bite to eat in the Jailhouse cafe it has English twist on a retro 50’s style diner.

Historic Elegance: Step back in time at The Grove Museum, it gives you a fascinating glimpse into Portland’s rich history. It was formerly the Governors house. This small but interesting collection explains the entire history of HM prison Portland. From 1848 when it was first constructed to the when it housed adult convicts in 1921 to its current operation as a young offender’s institution. Enjoy exploring the beautifully preserved rooms they offer a unique perspective on the area’s cultural heritage. Admire the architecture and artefact’s that tell the story of bygone eras. We suggest checking opening times before you go a as this museum is run by volunteers and sometimes is closed.
