Many of our guests like to take a walk once they have settled in. So, we are sharing with you one of our favourites so you can plan ahead and start your trip off on the right foot!
It is a delightful walk, that allows you to immerse yourself in the unique charm of the harbour area.
This scenic walk encompasses the ever-changing ambiance of the harbour, the iconic town bridge, historical landmarks, and breath-taking coastal views. So, let’s get started and embark on one of many casual walks through the heart of our picturesque town. Want to explore more of WEYMOUTH.
Allow 35 minutes plus any stops along the way.
Route Highlights:
1. Harbour Exploration:
Begin your walk by strolling along the harbour. Experience its distinct vibe, which transforms with the changing times of the day. We love an early walk, as the harbour feels like your own. Watch the sun rising and reflecting onto the still harbour waters.
Take a moment to appreciate the iconic town bridge, known for its periodic lifts it’s a true spectacle. During the summer its lifts run every hour on the even. It’s worth timing your visit to witness this.
2. Trinity Road to Hope Square:
Follow Trinity Road, soaking in the atmosphere and taking in the charm of the working harbour along the way. Pass arguably the best fish n chip shop, Bennett’s and the cosy Kings Arms pub.
Reach Hope Square, a quaint square area with a unique character. Perhaps stop and have a bit of liquid refreshment in The Red Lion. We love the array of musical events held here in the square.
3. Brewers Quay and Hill Lane:
You won’t miss Brewers Quay, a historic building built in 1903 which adds to the cultural richness of the area. It is slowly being renovated to its former glory. We enjoy keeping an eye on the developments.
Ascend Hill Lane cross over to the Look Out to gain elevation, stand and just enjoy the panoramic views towards Portland and to the left the Jurassic coastline. Totally breath-taking! This my favourite view and certainly my go to place for a refreshing swim.
4. Tranquil Coastal Walk to Nothe Fort:
Continue your journey along the tranquil coastline, appreciating the natural beauty and nature of the surroundings. Look up at the beautiful cedar trees and the gardens. There are lots of benches to sit on. In fact, this was the spot where we were, when we learned that our offer had been accepted on The Wadham! So, blessed 😊
Arrive at the impressive historic Nothe Fort, a well-preserved military fortress. Take a moment to peak in through the entrance. If you like history worth a visit at a later stage!
5. Loop Back and Stone Pier Cafe:
Begin your loop back, enjoying the serene coastal path once more, this time with views over the massive sandy bay of Weymouth. You will see the cliffs towards Osmington Mill. See if you can see King George on his horse on the distant hillside.
Pause at Stone Pier Cafe for a refreshing coffee break or just sit and take in the sea breeze. Savour the moment whilst watching all the different boats come and go through the harbour.
6. Return Journey:
Resume your walk back to the guesthouse. During the day there is a couple of local retired fishermen who operate a ferry service to the other side. Save those legs and take a ride or continue along the path whilst taking a slightly different route to experience a new perspective and pass our lovely lifeboat.
